Yugi groaned as the gym instructor led the boys to the balance beam. They had started doing gymnastics last week but today would be the boys' first round with the balance beam. Everyone sat down along the edge of the mat. Yugi found himself sitting in the middle of the line with Jonouchi to his right and Marik followed by Ryou to his left. His brother, Atem, was closer to the end. Atem had been dazzling everyone with his amazing feats of atheltism since the first day in gym class and Yugi was certain he would be subject to another bout of Mr. Perfect's greatness.

The first object was to get on the beam, balance, then walk across without falling. Most, including Yugi, managed this with little trouble. A couple couldn't and tumbled off onto the mat. Atem walked his way across with his eyes closed and hands behind his head as if he were strolling down the sidewalk. Yugi glared but he had seen Atem walking along railings so it didn't surprise him. Still Atem couldn't just walk across it like the others he had to have an attitude about it.

Next came little hops where one jumped up and down to get used to landing on the beam. Only the ones that had successfully walked would get to do the jumps. The few who had failed the walk were led away to work on their balance. When his turn came, Yugi managed to stay on the beam but he had to pump his arms wildly a couple of times to maintain his balance after a few of the hops. Jonouchi congrdulated him when he sat down. Several others had fallen off so Yugi had done well.

Atem had apparently lost patience with the whole excercise. He did his hops without the least bit of trouble then decided to show he was too advanced for the beginners' course and went into a more complicated routine. He jumped, cartwheeled, and spun impressing everyone that saw him, including Yugi.

Then it all went wrong. During one spin a foot snagged on the other ankle and down went Atem.

"OW!" shouted a dozen boys who flinched back in empathic pain as Atem landed on his crotch on the beam before crumpling over the side. Everyone was frozen for a moment in shock. It just didn't seem possible that Atem, who had been so confident on the beam, had just experienced the worst tumble of all.

Marik broke the silence with an unsympathetic remark, "And thus goes the monkey. I have to hand it to you, Atem, even your failures are spectacular."

"Are you all right, Atem?" asked Ryou while jabbing Marik in the ribs for his comment.

Atem shook, from rage or pain was unclear, as he struggled to pick himself off the ground. The instructor finally recovered enough to rush over and help Atem to his feet. 

Guess Mr. Perfect is human after all, thought Yugi as he watched Atem limp toward the nurse's office.
